•
•Social
work as a profession originated in the 19th century
•After
the end of feudalism, the poor were seen as a more direct
threat to the social order, the state formed an organized system to care for
them.
•
•In
England, the Poor Law served this purpose. This system of
laws sorted the poor into different categories, such as the able bodied poor, the impotent
poor, and the idle poor. This system developed different
responses to these different groups.
•
There was a great
leap in technological and scientific achievement, but there was also a great migration to urban areas throughout the Western world.
This led to many
social problems, which in turn led to an increase in social activism.
•
•
•Social
upheavals and mass migration contributed
significantly to the evolution of social work in UK
•
•The
UK government responded by offering free treatment in hospitals
•Hospital almoners were recruited to
help in the treatment of patients.
•
•
•The
first social workers were called almoners, and were based in
medical institution
•The Royal Free
Hospital hired Mary Stewart as the first almoners
in 1895
•
•Her
role was to assess people requesting treatment at the hospital
•Organized
and scientific charity
•Charitable work flourished in
industrialized countries from 19th century onwards
•Such
work led to organizations being formed by the middle
and wealthy classes to provide relief and
welfare to the poor and less privileged
•Contd….
•In
later half of the 19th century, there was formed two types of organized and
scientific charity approaches:
•
•Charity
organization society (cos), England in 1869
•Settlement
houses: Samuel Barnett founded Tonybee Hall
